Women’s Studies Group workshop in London, April 20, “Reading Jane Austen after Reading Charlotte Smith”

SSEMW members based in or visiting London are warmly invited to attend the forthcoming Women’s Studies Group workshop on 20 April.

This year’s theme is “Canons and Canonicity: Reading Jane Austen after Reading Charlotte Smith”. We are delighted to welcome Professor Jacqueline Labbe as the keynote speaker.

Participants are invited to bring a five minute presentation exploring the distinction between ‘major’ and ‘minor’ novelists, ‘high’ and ‘low’ literary cultures, originality and indebtedness, realism and the stylized. The contribution could include canonicity in other fields such as art, music, science, and in earlier periods, as well as issues of the relation between minor and major women figures in the arts and sciences.

Venue: Court Room, Senate House, University of London. 11.00am – 5.00pm.
